Retevis' upcoming product, the RA89, is a ham machine with an IP68 rating. In our impression, most of the waterproof grade of the walkie-talkie is IP67. So today I will take RA89 as an example to explain the difference between IP67 and IP68.
First of all, we need to clarify a concept,
IP = Ingress Protection
6 = dustproof
7 = Tested to operate at a depth of 15 cm to 1 m for a minimum of 30 minutes.
8 = Means completely waterproof, fully submerged up to one meter for more than 30 minutes.
Second, remember that the ingress protection tests use fresh water when evaluating the waterproof rating of a waterproof walkie-talkie. If your application involves other types of water, such as salt water or chlorinated pool water, note that your walkie talkie might require additional performance properties.
We can see that both IP67 and IP68 are very suitable for outdoor situations. IP68 will be more suitable for outdoor activities with relatively deep water, such as kayaking, rafting, canyoning, etc. In addition, if you are a first responder, when facing natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods, the waterproof rating of IP68 will be very suitable.
Retevis will launch a new IP68 dual-band ham radio - RA89. In addition to a higher level of waterproof, RA89 also features intelligent noise reduction, manual chirp programming, USB-C charging and long-distance calling and other functions. In the next articles, Sunny will bring you new function descriptions one after another, so stay tuned.
