Two-way radio systems are systems that enable enterprise-wide professional communications across large sites or even multiple locations. Today let's take a look at what is a two-way radio system.
A two-way radio can send and receive audio signals. It is designed to provide two-way communication between two people or between groups of people. Everyone using a two-way radio must communicate on the same frequency. Some frequencies are public and open to anyone, others are private roads. Some require special permits to use and others are available for anyone to use .
There are three main types of two-way radios: portable two-way radios (aka walkie-talkies), mobile radios, and desktop base station radios.
Portable radios
These types of two-way radios, also known as walkie-talkies, are handheld two-way radios that can transmit and receive voice communications. Professional workers often hang them from belt loops while on the job. They are classified as analog or digital two-way radios.
Mobile radios
Mobile two-way radios are designed to be mounted inside a vehicle and connected to an external antenna mounted on the outside of the vehicle. All mobile two-way radios are transceivers, which means they can both transmit and receive, and are designed to cover long distances.
Desktop base station radios
Desktop base station radios sit on top of a desk and plug into the wall for power. These types of two-way radios are very reliable, but are also larger and heavier than portable or mobile radio options.
The Family Radio Service (FRS) is a private, short-range voice, two-way and data communications service. Great for coming to promote family and group activities.
General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), the channels available to GMRS radio users are more powerful, have a longer range, and can be expanded as necessary. But has designated channels that require an FCC license to operate.
This is a short-range service for personal use. And there are only 5 MURS radio channels. It is best suited for short range two-way communications. It is suitable for use by hunters, farmers, or security personnel.
Citizens Band (CB) radios are part of what the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calls the Personal Radio Service.
Low Power Radio Service (LPRS) is a private, one-way communications service that can operate anywhere in the world.
